Thanksgiving Food Drive
WOW! We are so pleased to announce the amazing amount of support throughout our community for the Thanksgiving Food Drive. 6142.2 pounds of food and $775 in cash was donated in total. We could not have done this without the help of our dedicated and amazing volunteers who give their time and energy to make our food drive the success it was. We are also happy to report we only had 7% of waste which means all of you generous people in our community did not give outdated items and we thank you so much for no using the food drive to “clean out your pantry”. Out of all the bags that were delivered to peoples houses, we had a return of 25% from our gracious community. Thank you to all who contributed.

Covid-19 canceled many events this holiday season, and the CP Holiday Train was no exception. For many locals, viewing the train at its Notch Hill stop is a Christmas tradition, and for the food bank, this is one of our main opportunities for donations. Despite the cancellation, CP Rail came through for us and donated $4000, which is what they would have given us at this event. We are so thankful for this donation.

At the Sorrento Food Bank we rely on the generosity of our community members to help us provide for those in need in the areas we serve. December is for sure the month in which we have the largest need, and the month in which we deliver our largest hampers which include small gifts for everyone in the family. Here are a few ways that you can help:
- Donate non-perishable goods from our regular needs list (see below).
- Donate specialty items for the Christmas hampers such as olives, pickles, chocolates, fancy cookies, smoked oysters & nuts.
- Donate a gift item for a child or an adult.
- Donate cash – we purchase fresh foods: proteins, vegetables, dairy and grains for each hamper and your donation of cash goes a long way.
- Sponsor a hamper. For more information on how to do this and what is involved please contact our office.

Fill it with non-perishable food items and leave it out before 9:00am next Saturday, September 26th, somewhere it is easily seen from the road. 50K in May

Keeping your body moving is a big part of a healthy lifestyle, so a group of local individuals undertook the 50K in May Challenge. The idea was to run, walk, hike, or bike throughout the month of May and keep track of total mileage. In addition, they sought out people to sponsor them as they progressed through the challenge, with the proceeds going to the Sorrento Food Bank. Four people (all employees of Canada Post in Sorrento) managed to stay with the challenge and completed a total of 366km and raised $1119 for the food bank. Our Response to COVID-19

During the current pandemic, our food bank is operating as usual with a few slight changes. We are still open our regular hours from 9-3 on Wednesdays. In an attempt to protect our clients, staff, volunteers and the general public, and to help stop the spread of COVID-19, we are temporarily locking our door and will be delivering our service in a different manner. Please knock on the door and we will come to assist you. If at all possible, please call ahead (250-253-3663) so that we can have the appropriate hamper ready for you.

In recent months, donations have been down but the number of people who need our help has gone up. Due to COVID-19, we are expecting that need to increase even more. The CP Holiday Train made a stop at Notch Hill once again and it was one of the biggest turnouts ever. 1179.6 pounds of food and $1405.81 were donated by the public. Along with that, CP Rail donated $4000 to our food bank.

We are very grateful for the support and generosity of this community during the recent Thanksgiving Food Drive. We would like to extend special thanks to the Church of Latter Day Saints for their organization of the food drive, the volunteers who dropped off bags around the community and later picked up donations, and to the those who generously donated food. 3504.8 pounds of food donations came in, which helped to restock the food bank shelves, as you can see from the before and after photos below!

Food Bank BC Perishable Food Refrigeration Grant

The Sorrento Food Bank has been awarded $27,435 from the Food Bank BC Perishable Food Refrigeration Grant. With these
funds we have been able to purchase two commercial freezers, one cooler, three stainless steel food prep tables, two stainless steel carts and plastic food storage totes. This increased refrigeration and freezer capacity will ensure that the people in our community have access to fresh, healthy and nutritious food. We would like to extend our thanks to Food Banks BC and the Province of British Columbia.

One of the highlights of the Christmas season is the CP Holiday Train. It rolled into our local area at Notch Hill on Saturday, Dec. 15th. where the crowd waiting by the bonfires was treated to performances by the Sam Roberts Band, Kelly Prescott, and Sierra Noble. Thank you to those who donated to the food bank; $761 and 975.8 pounds of food was donated.

Members of the Shuswap Fire Department were out this weekend at the Blind Bay Village Grocer collecting food, clothing and cash donations for the food bank. With their uniforms on and collection boot in hand they managed to generate bags of warm clothing, 491.4 pounds of food and $1198.40 in cash donations. CP Holiday Train Rolls In To Notch Hill

The warmer weather and an on-time train brought out a happy and festive crowd last night in Notch Hill to enjoy the annual CP Rail Holiday Train. This year we were entertained by Alan Doyle and the Beautiful Band – an incredible concert with a nice mix of their famous tunes and traditional Christmas songs. And once again our community has shown its support of the food bank with a whopping 651.4 pounds of food and $676.55 in cash donations! CP Rail also showed us some huge love by donating $4000 to the food bank! Thank you CP Rail, thank you to everyone at the Notch Hill Community Hall for all your efforts last night and thank you to everyone for coming out and supporting the Sorrento Food Bank. If you know of an individual or a family that has come upon hard times this year and could benefit from a Christmas hamper, please contact our office by December 15th. Christmas hampers will be delivered to recipients on December 22nd.

WOW!! A huge thank you to the staff, students and families of Carlin Elementary Middle School. Their We Scare Hunger Halloween food drive brought in four boxes of food donations and $386.30! We really appreciate all of your support!!
7th Annual BC Thanksgiving Food Drive

Last Saturday, September 16th, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Salmon Arm participated in the 7th Annual BC Thanksgiving Food Drive and collected over 2300 pounds of food for the Sorrento Food Bank. We are so incredibly grateful for this donation and wish to thank all the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that participated, as well as all the members of our communities who donated food for the food drive. Now the task of sorting and storing all this precious food begins. 🙂

Sorrento Food Bank helping with BC Wildfire Situation

The Sorrento Food Bank was contacted and a request made to help the community of Horsefly who are cut off from not only the highway, but from services. Approximately 120 people, evacuees, firefighters and other emergency personal are stranded and food is scarce. As disaster relief is part of our constitution, we packed up our trailer and are happy to report that we were able to send approximately 1000 pounds of food and other supplies to help this community. Thank you to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic church and Lighthouse Market for your help and donations.
